According to reports from the U.S. Department of Energy, Texas wind farms generated over 35% of the state's electricity in the first half of 2026, a significant increase from 29% in 2025. This growth has been propelled by the completion of several new wind projects, including the 800-megawatt Horizon Wind Project near Sweetwater, which became operational in March.
The Horizon Wind Project, developed by NextEra Energy, represents an investment of over $1 billion and is expected to provide clean energy to more than 300,000 homes. “This project is a testament to Texas's commitment to renewable energy and our capability to innovate and grow,” stated Mark Johnson, Senior Vice President at NextEra Energy.
The remarkable growth in wind energy output is a culmination of favorable federal policies, a robust grid infrastructure, and increasing demand for clean energy solutions amidst climate change concerns.
