The landscape of solar energy in Texas is undergoing a profound transformation as investments in solar power projects have surged in 2026, with an estimated $3 billion committed in the first half of the year alone. This increase is largely attributed to the federal government’s Investment Tax Credit (ITC) extension, which has provided substantial financial incentives for solar developers.
The Texas solar market has seen a flurry of new projects coming online, particularly in areas such as San Antonio and Austin. San Antonio’s City Public Service has announced plans to build a 1,000 megawatt solar farm by the end of 2027, projected to power approximately 300,000 homes annually.
“This is a landmark moment for solar energy in Texas,” stated Sharyne Smith, the director of renewable energy at City Public Service. “With the support from federal incentives, we can significantly accelerate our transition to a cleaner energy future.”
According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Texas ranked as the second-largest solar market in the country, contributing nearly 20% of the nation’s solar capacity by mid-2026. This growth is primarily driven by large-scale utility projects and a burgeoning residential solar market.
In particular, residential solar installations have doubled compared to previous years, as homeowners increasingly seek ways to reduce energy costs amidst rising electricity prices. The average cost of residential solar systems has decreased by over 30% since 2022, making solar technology more accessible to the average Texan.
However, the growth is not without challenges. Local governments face hurdles in permitting processes, which can delay project completions. Furthermore, the rapid expansion of solar capacity raises questions about grid management and the need for enhanced energy storage solutions.
