As the global economy rebounds from the pandemic, Texas has witnessed a notable surge in oil production, with output reaching an impressive 5.2 million barrels per day in June 2026, according to the Texas Railroad Commission.

The increase, approximately 8% from the previous year, comes as demand for crude oil has escalated, driven by rising consumption in Asia and a growing appetite for fuel in Europe. Houston-based ExxonMobil has announced plans to expand its operations in the Permian Basin, which is the largest oil-producing region in the United States.

“We are committed to meeting the needs of our customers globally, and Texas remains a cornerstone of our production strategy,” said Scott Sheffield, CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources, during a press briefing last week. “The state’s rich resources and innovative technology will continue to drive our growth.”

Industry analysts anticipate that the rise in oil prices, which have recently reached $80 per barrel, is a trend that may persist, given the ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions stemming from Eastern Europe. This has prompted Texas companies to ramp up production in anticipation of sustained demand.

Moreover, local economies are reaping the benefits of increased oil activity. The city of Midland, often referred to as the heart of the Permian Basin, has reported a significant uptick in job creation, with an estimated 10,000 new positions added in the first half of 2026 alone.

However, the surge has not come without its challenges. Environmental concerns continue to mount, with advocacy groups urging lawmakers to impose stricter regulations on oil extraction processes. In response, state officials have reiterated their commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
