As crude oil prices hover around $85 per barrel, Texas oil producers are experiencing a significant resurgence, highlighted by increases in drilling activity across the Permian Basin.
According to the Texas Railroad Commission, the state has seen a 15% increase in active drilling rigs over the past six months, a reflection of the global demand for oil as economies continue to recover post-pandemic.
Major players such as ExxonMobil and Chevron are ramping up their operations, with Exxon announcing plans to invest $10 billion in the region over the next five years, aiming to expand its production capacity by 200,000 barrels per day.
“We are committed to sustaining and enhancing our operations in Texas, which remains a cornerstone of our global strategy,” stated ExxonMobil CEO Darren W. Woods. “The resilience of our workforce and the rich resources available have positioned us well to meet the rising demand.”
The uptick in production comes as the world grapples with geopolitical tensions, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, which have disrupted supply chains and increased prices. Texas, with its vast oil reserves, is poised to fill the gap.
As of August 2026, the state boasts approximately 400,000 barrels of oil produced daily from the Permian Basin alone. This resurgence has not only benefited large corporations but has also resulted in job creation, with over 5,000 new jobs added in the last quarter.
However, environmental concerns surrounding increased fossil fuel production remain high. Organizations advocating for renewable energy argue that Texas should pivot more aggressively towards sustainable solutions, especially given the state’s leadership in wind and solar energy.
“While we acknowledge the economic benefits of oil, it is crucial to also invest in cleaner energy solutions that will secure Texas’s future,” said Maria Rodriguez, director of the Texas Environmental Coalition.
In the coming months, as the demand for oil remains strong, Texas will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the global energy landscape, balancing the needs of economic growth with environmental stewardship.
