The state’s agricultural output, valued at approximately $23 billion in 2025, is now facing unprecedented challenges due to extreme weather patterns, including prolonged droughts and increasing temperatures. In response, farmers in areas such as the Panhandle and South Texas are increasingly investing in smart farming technologies.
According to the Texas A&M AgriLife Research, the adoption of precision agriculture techniques has grown by nearly 40% over the last two years. These methods include the use of drones for crop monitoring, soil sensors for moisture assessment, and AI-driven data analytics to optimize resource allocation.
“Technology is not just an option anymore; it’s a necessity for survival,” stated Dr. Sarah Lewis, an agricultural economist at Texas A&M. “Farmers are realizing that the more they leverage technology, the better equipped they are to handle climatic adversities.”
In Amarillo, local farmer Johnathan Cruz has transformed his vast cotton fields by integrating advanced irrigation systems that utilize real-time weather data to minimize water waste. “Last year, we saved about $30,000 in water costs alone while increasing our yields by 15%,” Cruz remarked. “It’s about making every drop count.”
