San Antonio's municipal utility, CPS Energy, has announced a $500 million investment plan for solar energy projects aimed at meeting the city's growing power demands over the next decade.
The city, known for its commitment to renewable energy, is targeting a goal of 50% renewable generation by 2030, significantly increasing from the current 30%. The investment will fund the construction of several large-scale solar farms throughout Bexar County, projected to generate an additional 1,000 megawatts of power by 2030.
“This investment is a bold step towards a sustainable future for San Antonio,” said Paula Gold-Williams, CEO of CPS Energy. “It not only enhances our energy portfolio but also ensures that we can meet the needs of our growing population.”
Currently, San Antonio is one of the largest solar markets in Texas, thanks in part to its favorable climate and community support for renewable initiatives. The city has already seen a 20% increase in solar installations since 2020, driven by both residential and commercial demand.
The investment comes on the heels of a recent report from the Texas Public Utility Commission indicating that the state will need to significantly ramp up renewable energy production to avoid potential supply shortages in the coming years. With population growth projected to increase by 2 million residents in the next decade, the demand for electricity is expected to surge.
CPS Energy's solar initiative will also include community solar programs aimed at providing residents with access to renewable energy options, regardless of their income level. This program is designed to empower low-income families by reducing their electricity bills and encouraging participation in the green economy.
As part of the funding, CPS Energy has also secured partnerships with private investors who are committed to supporting sustainable energy development. This collaborative effort is seen as a model for future public-private partnerships in the renewable sector.
