On August 1, 2026, Dallas has emerged as a frontrunner in the adoption of smart grid technology, with plans for a citywide rollout expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Dallas Electric Company (DEC), aims to enhance energy efficiency and reliability through advanced metering infrastructure and real-time data analytics. The project, which began in early 2025, has an estimated budget of $150 million and is part of a broader effort to modernize the city’s energy distribution network.
“Our goal is to create a more resilient energy grid that can meet the demands of our growing population while reducing energy consumption,” said Sarah Mitchell, Chief Technology Officer at DEC. “The smart grid will allow us to better integrate renewable energy sources and improve overall service delivery.”
The smart grid system will incorporate features such as automated outage detection, demand response capabilities, and enhanced cybersecurity measures. This will not only provide improved service for consumers but also empower them with data about their energy consumption patterns.
As part of the rollout, DEC has partnered with local tech firms and universities to develop innovative solutions that will enhance grid operations. “Collaboration with academic institutions and private sector partners has been essential for the successful implementation of this project,” Mitchell added.
The initiative has received accolades from various stakeholders, including the Texas Public Utilities Commission (PUC). “Smart grid technology is the future of energy in Texas, and Dallas is setting a benchmark for other cities to follow,” stated PUC Chair John Wright.
Local residents can expect to see the benefits of the new system firsthand, including the potential for lower energy bills and more reliable service. In addition, the project is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs during its implementation phase.
